CENTRAL
PACIFIC REGION Cabo Blanco to Drake Bay
We
are located in the picturesque beach village of Quepos, 5 miles
south of the famous National Park of Manuel Antonio. (click
here to see map of Quepos)
Quepos
region offers the best inshore and offshore fishing throughout
the year. The area is well protected from the prevailing
northerly winds and enjoys pretty close to ideal weather although
you can expect rain most anytime from May through December,
especially in the afternoons.
Billfish
are the favored target of most visiting anglers, and they are
seldom disappointed from around December through April. To release
a half dozen sails and even a marlin or two in a fishing day
is common but not unusual to release more than a dozen sailfish
a day. There are also Dolphin, Giant Yellofin Tuna, Wahoo, Cubera,
Roosterfish, a variety of Snapper, Grouper, Blue Runners, Rainbow
Runners, Snook, Jacks, Mackerel and much more. Costa Rica's
sport fishing records speak for themselves: there were more
than 70 current IGFA worked record fish from Costa Rica waters
including 17 all - tackle marks.
We
also offer multi-day fishing trips to the Drake Bay and Caños
Island area, overnighting at one of the several lodges centered
around Drake Bay. This region is best known for its wahoo, big
cubera and roosterfish, but are also tuna, dorado, sails and
occasional marlin.

Marlin
|
The
months of January through mid September are good
for Marlin. October is normally the top month for
fishing marlin in this area, but action is also
good in November and occasional blues and rare black
are likely to be found any time of year although
they are usually out further than the boats hunting
for sailfish are likely to be fishing.

Sailfish
|
Mid
December to the end of April is rated the best season,
but the big schools often move in about October
and stay longer. A few sails always show among the
catch from June through September, mixed with the
other species that are found during those months.

Tuna
|
Found
throughout the year as they are all along the Pacific
coast, but most abundant from about May through
October. Most are the 8 to 12 ponders, but a dozen
or more over 200 pounds and maybe another two dozen
in the 100 to 200 pound range are taken every year.

Wahoo
|
Is a highly Price sportfish reaching good size and often caught no to far from shore. The Wahoo is a very strong fighter, fast moving and is known in the Sportfishing Arena for the speed and strength of their first run. Mostly caught during the rainy season.

|
Dorado
|
Are fast, flashy and aerobatic with beautiful blue, yellow and green color. Are the fasted growing fish in the ocean. Are caught by fisherman duo to their beauty size, food quality. They are caught year round and more abundant during the rainy season.

Roosterfish
|
Fishing
for this hard-hitting inshore species is little
short of incredible with the best spots off the
river mouths and the rocky drops-offs. Exceptional
at the mouth of the Parrita; Seco Palo between Parrita
and Damas; just outside Damas; off the mouth of
the Naranjo; around the points at Dominical and
throughout the Drake Bay area. Best fishing is from
June through early September.

|
|
Snook
|
Just
coming into its own as a fishery targeted by local
operators. Best spots are just off the many river
mouths all along the coast, up the Sierpe River
and in the big lagoon on the Sierpe. The world record
Pacific black shook was taken a couple years ago
in July just off the mouth of the Río Naranjo and
although it is a new fishery, the best months seem
to be from July through November during the heavy
rain season.

Snapper
|
Snapper
have been caught in the area year round. The most
popular is the Cubera Snapper.
